Village Realty photo contest features ‘Village Realty People’

Nags Head, N.C. – Hundreds of vacationers submitted entries to the Village Realty Photo Contest but it came down to a stunning image of a boy flying his kite under a bright sun, white, puffy clouds and a blue sky that took first place.

Anh Do of Vienna, Va. was named the Grand Prize Winner of 2009 contest and he was awarded a free off-season week in a Village Realty property of his choice. The image of Do’s son Nathan flying the kite truly captures that sand between the toes feeling of an Outer Banks vacation.
According to Jeannie Maynard of Village Realty, the contest reflected how much fun vacationers have while spending time on the Outer Banks.
“With over 1,600 entries, and many, many great photos, it was hard to narrow it down to semi-finalists and then finalists,” she said. “With the help of three local photographers, we were able to get it down to seven finalists.
“Then, we then let our reservation staff choose the winner,” Maynard said.

Another exciting image was taken of a young girl getting a ride on a clean and green breaking wave. Doug Grant of Richmond, Va. stood in the surf zone to photograph his daughter Gracie with her mouth wide open.

Grant won free, two-night stay at a Village Realty property during the off season.

There were five additional finalists. Each will receive a $100 gift certificate to use any time towards a stay in any Village Realty property. And, they will also receive a second $100 gift certificate to give to a friend to use.
“The photos were amazing -- from funny to romantic to fun and touching,” Maynard said. “Some were about people, places and the sheer beauty of the Outer Banks.

Thanks to everyone who participated,” she said. “We will be holding another contest in 2010 and look forward to seeing more creative expressions of our guests’ visits to the Outer Banks."
Special thanks go to Outer Banks photographers Melody Leckie, Kristen Lewis and Neil Thurston who helped judge of our photo contest.

Thanksgiving Trivia

Did you know:

  • The author is the classic nursery rhyme "Mary had a little lamb" was Sarah Josepha Hale. She was a very influential magazine editor and author in the mid 19th century and waged a tireless campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday.
  • There are only three fruits that are entirely native to North American soil according to the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers' Association.  They are the Concord grape (of course), the blueberry and the cranberry.
  • There are three towns in the United States that take their name from our traditional Thanksgiving bird, including Turkey, Texas (pop. 465); Turkey Creek, Louisiana (pop. 363); and Turkey, North Carolina (pop. 270).
  • According to the United States Census Bureau, the top turkey producing state is Minnesota. This state had a planned production total of 49 million in 2008.
  • Six states will produce almost two-thirds of the estimate 271 million turkeys that were raised in the US this year. Those states are Minnesota, North Carolina (shout out), Arkansas, Virginia, Missouri and Indiana.
  • The largest pumpkin pie ever baked, according to the Guiness Book of World Records, weighed 2,020 pounds and measured over 12 feet long.  It was baked by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers in Ohio on October 8, 2005.
  • The original Thanksgiving feast in 1621 occurred sometime between September 21 and November 11 and lasted three days.
  • Each year in America Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November. Most years this is the last Thursday in November, but when there are five Thursdays in November,  Thanksgiving falls on the second to last Thursday.
  • There is nothing better than having Thanksgiving dinner on the Outer Banks.

Delicious Dining - Flying Fish Cafe located at MP 9.5

Flying Fish Cafe located at milepost 9.5 in Kill Devil Hills and offers some delicious options on their extensive menu. I went last week with my husband and in-laws. We all walked out with our bellys full and extremely satified with our meal. We ordered a vegetable cream cheese crab dip appetizer served warm with pita points - amazing! Then on to the entree chilean sea bass encrusted with parmesan panko, patty pan squash, jasmine rice and then topped with red pepper sauce. It was so delicious! My husband ordered a filet mignon wrapped in bacon topped with horseradish butter, garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus - I sampled the filet and have to say it was one of the best ever.  To top off our dining experience Flying Fish is currently offering a scratch off ticket for each table and we happened to get out appetizer for FREE. Once you redeem the ticket you are then entered to win a trip to Costa Rica! Why-not?!

Local Favorites Deliver

Barco is on the move ... saving another Outer Banker from hunger!

In my line of work I really need to stay focused.  On any given day I may be juggling two-five projects and they are all important.  On those days I hate to break my concentration and leave my desk for lunch. Yeah, yeah I have heard that it is better to step away and give yourself a break and I do that when I can but on those days that I simply can't or won't I know I can always count on Country Deli in Nags Head. They deliver!  I mean they deliver good food but they really BRING it to you.  And, they are always so nice and the food is consistently good.

Today I am having  a turkey club .. and their sandwiches are HUGE.  When the weather gets cooler they feature a daily soup and I am really looking forward to that.

Country Deli is located in Surf Side Plaza in Nags Head.  They feature sandwich specials every day or you can choose from the menu. Cheese steak, yum.  How about the "No Name" which is roast beer, cheddar, lettue, onion, mayo and horseradish on a kaiser roll?  Mondays' special is "I wouldn't brisket" and is loaded with pastrami, corn beef, jack cheese and mustard on rye.   I could go on and on but you get the point.

Open year round and they do have some breakfast items too.   This is a family owned and operated business and they have been making good food for Outer Banks locals and visitors since 1990.

No, I do not own the company and no I was not paid to say this. We try to promote local businesses as much as we can here at the Village and today is officially Country Deli Day.

Do you want chips or pretzels with that sandwich?
Almost forgot ... you need that phone number; 441-5684.
