More Than 2,700 Photos Submitted in the Annual Contest

NAGS HEAD, N.C. - Alex Bulow of Gibsonia, PA, is the Grand Prize winner of the 2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest, sponsored by Outer Banks-based Village Realty.

Bulow's photo - "First Sunset at The Waterfront Shops in Duck, NC" - was entered in the Knock Our Socks Off Sunrise or Sunset category. The photo depicts a sunset reflected in his baby daughter's sunglasses. It was taken during the Bulows' first visit to the Outer Banks.

The originality of the composition won over the judges from Village Realty. "This photo was the front runner right from the beginning," the judges commented. "From the crabby sunglasses to the expression on this little girl's face to the beautiful sunset reflected in those glasses, we just loved it."
As Grand Prize winner, Bulow received a free off-season week in one of Village Realty's Outer Banks vacation rental homes.

Hope Mills NC Resident Wins in 2011 OBX Photo Contest

NAGS HEAD, N.C. - Rachel Long of Hope Mills, N.C., was named First Runner Up in the 2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest, sponsored by Outer Banks-based Village Realty.

Long's photo was entered in the Best of the Beach category and shows her husband and son watching a sunrise on the beach in Corolla. The Village Realty judges chose her photo as their second favorite from a pool of 2,700 photographs. The judges declared: "This was a close second to the grand prize winner and once again captured our hearts. You can feel the special bond between this father and son and experience the awe that this sunrise inspired. A real favorite with us."

As First Runner Up, Long received a free, two-day, off-season stay in one of Village Realty's Outer Banks vacation rental homes as well as a gift certificate to Kelly's Outer Banks Restaurant and Tavern.

Ashley Bales of Richmond VA named winner in 2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest

NAGS HEAD, N.C. - Ashley Bales of Richmond, Va., was named a winner in the 2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest, sponsored by Outer Banks-based Village Realty.

Bales' photo won the top prize in the "Mancation or Divacation" category. The photo depicts seven women sitting by the ocean on the Outer Banks. Bales captioned her photo: "Bachelorette weekend at the Outer Banks. A taste of heaven."

The Village Realty judges said: "We hope all these "divas" were as relaxed and happy as this photo looks like they were. Each of us could picture ourselves sitting right there with them."

Bales won a $100 gift certificate good towards a stay at a Village Realty vacation rental.

Milford NJ resident wins in 2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest

NAGS HEAD, N.C. - Diane Heitmann of Milford, N.J., was named winner of the Pets category in the 2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest, sponsored by Outer Banks-based Village Realty.

Heitmann's photo, submitted in the Fluffy and Fido category, depicts her golden retriever resting on the sand with a stars and stripes beach ball. The photo was taken on July 4th on the Outer Banks.

The Village Realty judges, especially the dog lovers, fell in love with the photo. The photo will be used on the www.petfriendlyobx.com website.
As winner in the Pets category, Heitmann received $150 toward a stay in a Village Realty's Outer Banks vacation rental home in 2012.

2011 Village Realty Employee of the Year

One of the very telling things about nominations for employee awards is who does the nominating. Being nominated by people yuo work directly with as well as those in other departments says a lot. Many times there are two or three nominations for the same person. This years winner received eight. Here are some excerpts from the nominations:

Christine Sawyer has been with Village Realty for five years. During most of that time she excelled as a vacation specialist in the rental department. This spring she accepted a new position as Manger of the Administrative Department at our Guest Operations office in Nags Head. This means she is in charge of the group of people who take and dispatch all of the maintenance calls that come in every day.
It is a very demanding position and Chris clearly led her team through a very busy summer...including a hurricane evacuation and securing of homes...successfully and with glowing reviews from her peers.

For the third consecutive year the Village Realty Sales Agent of the Year is Matt Myatt.

Despite another challenging year for the real estate industry Village Realty agents worked diligently in 2011 and closed more transactions than in 2010. While property values did decline some this year we are hopeful that values will stabalize in 2012 and that the market will start to recover.

We want to take a minute to recognize an important achievement for Village Realty. As a result of the collective efforts of all the agents we are once again in the top four real estate companies on the Outer Banks...both in dollar volume and number of transactions closed in 2011. Village Realty has twenty real estate agents competing against much larger firms with many more agents.

The Top Producers for Village Realty in 2011 are:

John Register received the Bronze Award for sales totaling more than $5.1 million dollars. John works out of the Nags Head office.

Sarah Spencer won the Silver Award for selling over $9.1 million dollars worth of properties. Sarah is an agent in our Corolla office

And of course, Matt Myatt..."Top Dog" with over $11 million dollars in total sales for 2011. Matt also works out of our Corolla office.

Broughton's photo, submitted in the "Village Realty Shout Out" category, depicts two cousins kicked back in beach chairs after finishing a shell art creation on the beach. Broughton said the kids filled their buckets with shells all week, and then enjoyed putting them to good use for a little Village Realty promo. "Their hard work paid off," said a judge with Village Realty. "Cute kids and a great shout out."

As winner in the category, Broughton received $100 toward a stay in a Village Realty Outer Banks vacation rental home in 2011 or 2012.

Outer Banks, NC – Shirley Brooks-Jones of Dublin, Ohio is the recipient of the 2009 Hometown Hero Award based on a winning essay submitted by her nephew, Tim Byrd.

The family was gathered for the holidays and once again, the dinner table conversation was centered around the “Lewisporte Area 15 Scholarship Fund” (formerly ‘Flight 15 Scholarship Fund’) which was spearheaded by his Aunt Shirley in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11^th, 2001. Tim was inspired listening to his Aunt recount her personal story about that most scary of times. When he saw the request for “Hometown Heroes” on the Village Realty website (www.villagerealtyobx.com) Tim submitted his marvelous story for consideration. The entire family just spent a week at the Croatan Surf Club in Kill Devil Hills, in two beautiful oceanfront condominiums, honoring Shirley for her generous spirit.

Ten years ago on 9/11, Shirley was on Delta Flight 15 returning from Denmark when the captain announced the plane was having ‘technical difficulty’ and needed to land at the nearest airport, which happened to be a very small terminal in Gander, Newfoundland. The passengers were unsettled but understanding and relieved when they landed safely. It was perplexing to see so many other jet airliners grounded and more flying into such a small village airport. Finally, the pilot conceded with solemn sincerity to his passengers that there really was no technical malfunction, but a national emergency in the United States: Passenger jet planes had demolished the twin towers in New York, the pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a passenger plane flying over Pennsylvania had reportedly gone down. Shirley and her 218 fellow passengers on Flight 15 were awestruck. For 28 ½ hours, afterwards all of the passengers remained on their grounded planes as luggage was checked by security. The passengers expressed fear and an understandable sense of concern for family and friends in their homeland of America. The pilot kept them updated as he found out more information but there was no way to determine how long they would have to remain in this little place called Gander, Newfoundland, or even on that plane waiting for word. Eventually, the passengers were disembarked and shuttled by bus to various inns and bed & breakfasts, and homes of the people of nearby Lewisporte. There they were met with open arms and generous hospitality of the most friendly and sympathetic village. Cell phones were shared amongst the people, computers were offered and most of all warmth and welcoming for these people of America, who wanted so desperately to just go home.

After only spending a few days with the kind people of Lewisporte, Shirley and her fellow passengers eventually bid farewell and boarded their Delta Flight 15 for Atlanta. Shirley had an epiphany. How to thank these people for their hospitality? She would start a scholarship fund for their children! She quickly raised $15,000 in pledges on the plane for the “Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund” and after they landed and everyone went their separate ways…Shirley spent the next ten years traveling back and forth to Gander, presenting scholarships each year to the children. To date, the fund has raised over $1.5 million.

Shirley’s nephew Tim and his wife Jamie have been coming to the Outer Banks for family vacations with their children for four years, usually staying in a home on the soundside of the Currituck Club in Corolla through Village Realty. They were delighted come to Kill Devil Hills this past week after Thanksgiving to enjoy the oceanfront views from the Croatan Surf Club. The beautiful heated indoor pool was a treasure for all and they said they enjoyed the luxurious kitchen amenities in the condo so much, they didn’t venture out to dinner, except to pick up some delicious peel & eat shrimp to go from “Awful Arthur’s” twice, to bring home. They did do some Christmas shopping at the local shoppes and had lunch in Manteo at “Darrell’s Seafood”. They loved walking on the beach, collecting shells and enjoyed the sunshine and balmy breeze with their balcony doors open to the ocean air. All in all, it was a magnificent vacation and they will ALL be back again, and again!

Winner of OBX SPCA Auction says "Thank You, Village Realty!"

Outer Banks, NC: Sherrill Cole (Harrington, DE) and her family have been coming to the Outer Banks on their summer vacation for the past six years. They usually rent a large house in Nags Head and invite the entire family, including Sherrill's sister, Vicki Hyatt (Asheville, NC) who gladly drives 10 hours to the beach for the annual reunion.

Along with many other guests, Hurricane Irene put a damper on their scheduled vacation at the end of August. During that week, Sherrill monitored the Village Realty facebook updates and was impressed by the up-to-date information provided by the Web Services team. While reading some of the posts, she discovered there were many places and activities, other than going to the beach, that their family had yet to explore.

It was on facebook, that she discovered there was an OBX SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) online auction for a full-week at a beach house in Kill Devil Hills (to be used September 17th-24th). Sherrill and her husband Joseph, were still in mourning over the loss of their beloved cocker spaniel, "Buffy" who had passed away this past June at the age of 14 (human years). They had discussed doing something in her memory, and donating to the OBX SPCA sounded like a wonderful idea, and who knew? They might even win a week back at the beach to make up for their loss this summer. Sherrill was absolutely delighted to discover her bid of $625.00 won at the end of the online auction. She couldn't wait to call her sister, Vicki and tell her the good news! Her generous donation went straight to benefit the SPCA in honor of Buffy, and she and Joseph headed straight to the beach!

They all checked in to their pet friendly Village Realty vacation rental "Avalon Limin'", Sherrill gasped at how adorable the house was! She said she walked from room to room commenting, "I love the colors! I want to do that in my own home in Delaware!" The house was appointed and updated with all the amenities she could imagine for a comfortable three-bedroom beach cottage. Buffy would have loved it.

Village Realty provided gift certificates for "Goombay's Grille & Raw Bar" in Kill Devil Hills and "Lucky 12 Tavern" in Nags Head. These new restaurant adventures, along with journeying to watch the Outer Banks Pro Surf Contest presented by Hurley at Jennette's Pier, fishing & crabbing on the Roanoke Sound by Pirate's Cove and playing miniature golf at Jurassic Putt (MP 16 on the bypass) in Nags Head....are just some of the activities they have already accomplished this week.

One of the most surprising was stopping for an ice cream cone at Scammell's Corner Surf Shop & Ice Cream Parlor (MP 15.5 on the Beach Road, Nags Head) where the scooper, Matt actually sang a song while he served up their order..."a real live singing ice cream scooper!" Matt even commented, "Hey, weren't you folks here a few weeks ago during the hurricane?" Wow, he remembered! Good customer service and a place to return for sure!

Sherrill would like to thank Village Realty for once again offering up one of the best vacations ever! She and Joseph will be celebrating their 16th Wedding Anniversary this year and guess where they will be staying with the whole family in tow!?

Village Realty: Anatomy of a Hurricane

Who are the people, behind the scenes who organize the preparations of the Village Realty homes, condominiums, offices when a hurricane threatens off the coast of our beautiful beaches? What hatches are determined to be battened down...and by whom?

Most Outer Banks resort homeowners live out of state, and can't travel (especially during inclement weather) to secure their properties when a hurricane warning is issued from the (NOAA "National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) National Weather Service. Therefore, they must rely on their Village Realty resort support team to ensure their outdoor furnishings are moved indoors, their pools and spas covered, their wind side windows are boarded up or latched and their grills, plants and other items are moved to higher, safer locations. While everyone is doing these sorts of things at their own homes, work at Village Realty increases ten-fold for those who have the responsibility of trying to organize the preparation, and then deal with the aftermath of the storm for over 600 additional homes.

Below are some of those people, who batten down hatches both literally and figuratively under the all encompassing umbrella of Village Realty:

GUEST OPERATIONS

Before the hurricane arrived, a company-wide Manager's Meeting was held to discuss what preparation and recovery procedures had worked well in past similar circumstances. A task force was assigned by dividing the entire company into working "Storm Teams" to ensure guests were safe, homes were secure and everything was ready as quickly as possible before Hurricane Irene actually made landfall.

These tasks included, contacting all guests and homeowners, securing decks, outdoor furnishings, swings, pools, spas, trash cans, etc. When the Mandatory Evacuation of All Visitors for both Dare and Currituck counties were ordered, each of those homes needed a contact person to follow up. While some "Village People" were assigned to actually go into the homes and empty refrigerators, turn off power and/or water, adjust thermostats and lock down doors and windows, other employees were manning the office fielding phone calls from worried guests or homeowners and keeping everyone else updated with the latest news, weather and evacuation reports. There were teams for each of these chores, and all pulled their weight, worked as early or late as needed to maintain that everything on the list, every guest and every home was ready for the hurricane several days prior. Finally, late Friday afternoon, the employees locked up the Village offices and warehouses to comply with the Mandatory Evacuation of All Residents (for those who needed to secure their own homes and leave the island that day.)

On Sunday, every single employee who could and who had remained on the island, returned to work (even before the power was restored in some cases) after the hurricane to help clean, restore, restock every home for the displaced guests who were permitted to reenter the island.

Village Realty, at full capacity before the hurricane, was also able to offer a few evacuated vacation properties to Hatteras Island guests, as well as some residents, who could not return to Hatteras Island at all because the only access (Route 12 South) had literally washed away.

It was organized chaos in a way. A catastrophe, yes. A team of good hard-working people, who could handle it, absolutely!

HOMEOWNER ASSOCIATION MANAGERS

While Village Realty is just one name, the all-encompassing umbrella of vacation rental properties extends all over the Outer Banks. The Owner Association Managers were busy coordinating with twenty-one (21) separate communities where the homes and condos are located such as (The Village at Nags Head, Sandpiper Cay, Martin's Point, The Croatan Surf Club, Seven Sisters, Whispering Sands, The Hunt Club etc.) where common areas such as pools, gardens, parks, pathways and parking areas were endangered with potential high winds and flooding. This team not only worked to secure the grounds, but willingly helped stash deck furnishings and helped housekeeping changing linens, cleaning and making beds after many guests left during the mandatory evacuation.

Emily Lewis, Employee Relations Coordinator stated "We did it all, working in conjunction with the various Property Owner Associations before the storm, and undid it all afterwards."

After the storm, most of the housekeeping staff were stranded in Columbia due to road closures and flooding, so the accounting team and administrative staff, along with every other department stepped up to clean houses, made beds and ready the homes for returning guests. All of this happened behind the scenes for the most part, with the Web Services team serving as communication central, providing information, alerts and updates far and wide...while maintaining their wonderful sense of humor.

If/when another hurricane threatens...the Village People have proven time and time again they can weather any storm.

COROLLA

Meanwhile, up in Corolla the hurricane preparedness troops were organized to inventory all sections of the north beach area properties. Karen Gregory, Vacation Specialist and Krista Templeton, Assistant Rental Manager remained in the office to monitor the communications, phones and requests coming in and trying to quickly check out the remaining people who waited until the Emergency Evacuation was declared mandatory for all guests and visitors. They were a day behind, so the Nags Head office sent in assistance. As Friday before the storm waned into evening…local residents had to leave the resort area to secure their own homes and families. Ken & Krista Templeton remained in Corolla for the duration. Although their home was thirty miles away, in Kill Devil Hills, they realized there would be no one in the isolated Corolla area to survey and assist after the impending storm. One of Village Realty’s long-time homeowners from Virginia offered their Corolla Light soundview vacation rental home on Route 12N for the couple to hunker down.

As the wind and water began to take its toll, the Templeton’s were happy that they were there to save all of the electronics (flat screen televisions, etc.) that would have been completely ruined when water began seeping down the interior walls on the soundside. As the storm raged on Saturday, the power was lost and the Templeton’s had to take turns charging their cell phone lifelines with their truck battery. All vehicles were moved to higher levels as the water from the sound rose over nine feet above the sea wall. Thankfully, the Corolla Light bulkheads were built high enough to prevent any major flooding. Other areas on the soundside in Duck weren’t so lucky.

By Sunday, the only road leading from Duck to Corolla was closed due to flooding, and those brave folks who remained in Corolla were temporarily cut off from the rest of the world.

Ken & Krista, being the only people from Village Realty needed to assess the post-hurricane damage. They drove their truck to Magnolia Bay in the Currituck Club and were saddened to see trees in pools, trash cans with garbage from the evacuated guests that weren’t secured strewn all about…but the saddest thing, to Krista were the many seagulls and pelicans, egrets and other water fowl that didn’t make it. She and her husband got to work cleaning the common areas and private properties for over six solid hours that day.

On Monday, Route 12 was reopened so some of the housekeeping crews and other employees could trickle through to help. The sparse Corolla team worked until well after midnight readying homes for the return of guests who were allowed to return when the Wright Memorial Bridge from the mainland reopened at 10AM the following morning.

It was a great challenge to body, mind and spirit but they did it. When guests began arriving, the exhausted but proud Corolla office was as ready as they could be. Most of the people checking in were very understanding, and the homeowners were magnificent in their help with accommodating guests who didn’t have working pools or hot tubs for their vacations that week after the hurricane, by offering reimbursements, etc.

Krista marveled that some guests revealed a sad “Vacation Remorse” as they departed at the end of the week. Although their luxurious rental homes were pristine, and their long awaited vacations were finally happening…as the guests drove around the area, went to dinner, etc. they witnessed the devastation around them. Many of the people who live here on the Outer Bank had lost their own homes and cars to the flash floods. The out of town guests said they did not feel as if they should be “enjoying themselves” when there was so much to do in and around them. Some of these wonderful guests offered their assistance, either financially, or with honest to goodness ‘get down and dirty’ work.

She wanted to be able to offer immediate and needed financial assistance to the post-hurricane relief efforts of the Outer Banks Community Foundation (OBCF). The foundation was created in October of 1982 as a public charity to meet local needs in the Outer Banks area, not ordinarily within the province of other charitable organizations, religious institutions, or government.

Through quickly appealing to her guests, the magic of Village Realty Web Services Team and Facebook technology she offered a 2 Night Stay/Gift Certificate at the beautiful First Colony Inn, to the first ten (10) people who donated $100.00 to the fundraiser. Sarah figured a $1000 donation would be pretty nice! Because so many people who cherish visiting the Outer Banks so wanted to help, the donations poured in immediately from twenty one (21) generous guests, raising a whopping $2,300.00 total!! There was simply no way to distinguish which ten were the quickest as some of the donations came by mail, some in person, some via credit card...so ALL of the participants received a Gift Certificate. It was a win, win, win!

Obie: Summer 2011 (Metaphoric Story of a Southern Hostess)

Obie was having a wonderful summer! Her home was pristine and gorgeous...all of her guests said so! She would greet each of them with open arms, welcoming them to enjoy their visit. She was especially proud of the east side, which featured the beautiful Atlantic coastal beaches. The west side of Obie's home offered the calming waters of the Pamlico Sound with a spectacular sunset view for guests to enjoy in the evenings.

There was always something to do. Obie took great pride in her home and there was nothing she wouldn't do to ensure her guests were always comfortable, relaxed, well fed. If they preferred peace and quiet, she gave them places of beauty for solitude, reading, sunning and meditation...beaches, gardens and beautiful peaceful gazebos. If the guests wanted to be entertained, there was always dancing, live music, karaoke, a live outdoor show, movies, nightlife everywhere. Fancy dinners were the norm at Obie's, but there were also little nooks and crannies that offered a quick bite or cool drink. Children were Obie's special joy, so she arranged sand-castle building, museums, surf lessons, an aquarium with live sharks and all sorts of fun things. For the men, there was fishing and golf...and for the ladies, shopping sprees and luncheons. Adults enjoyed cocktails on the decks in the evenings and breakfast on the piers in the mornings.

Everyone was on vacation, of course...except for Obie. She worked all day and all night, all summer long catering to her guests. It was exhausting at times, but seeing the satisfaction and sun kissed smiles as her guests came and went gave her a sense of pride of a job well done.

Obie was a bit concerned, when she heard a hurricane was brewing just offshore...so she took precautions and began to ready herself, and her guests. Some of the guests gladly left early, leaving Obie to prepare her home, board up windows, tie down her deck furniture, ready the boats. Some guests stayed till the last minute, which was really fine with Obie, as long as they didn't need too much while she was busy battening down the hatches. She still catered to their needs, ensuring they were comfortable and reassuring them she would do her best not to neglect them, although as the storm approached her to-do list was getting pretty long.

Obie was visibly relieved, when just a day before the storm arrived her last guests departed (although somewhat begrudgingly). With one full day, Obie worked well into the wee hours readying her home. When she finally rested and sat back to watch as Hurricane Irene approached from the south...she closed her eyes and prayed.

With no power, no means of communication, winds howling, rain pouring and the sound rising....Obie was devastated as she watched her beloved west side disappear under a surge of sound water....the water literally took bits of her home away with it as it receded. Other parts of Obie's home were so ravaged, that not only would guests not be able to return, Obie herself could not even access the area to assess the damage...all she knew for certain was, it would never be the same again.

The next morning, she awoke to find her beautiful docks were gone, the gardens crushed, her favorite reading place washed away. The hurricane had passed further north, but a horrific mess was left behind for Obie to deal with. She took a deep breath, and began to clean, and pile and sweep and wash. She mucked and cried and picked up pieces of her former life just a few days before...soggy and ruined by the flooding. She was filthy, and hungry and tired. Two days of nothing but destruction and sadness. At times it seemed hopeless that she would be able to do it all. How could she get it back to the way it was before? How much time did she have? Where would she find the energy?

Obie wept for her beloved home.

Then, a flicker of light...the power came back on! Well that certainly helped! The phones were working! The sun began to shine. The birds were back chirping in the trees. Dripping with mud, sweat and tears Obie muddled through. She did what she could do. She cleaned up what she could and made the best of a bad situation, as she always had. Listening to the radio (Beach 104) she learned that she was not alone, there were many in her same situation or worse. She called in and offered to help her neighbors as far away as she could.

In no time at all, she heard them...trucks and cars and campers and RV's and motorcycles...all heading her way. Her scheduled guests had once again begun to arrive, anyway!

At first, Obie was overwhelmed...there was still so much to do, she was a wreck and her home certainly wasn't up to par for guests. But here they were! Some came with shovels, some with cleaning supplies, some with strong arms and legs offering to help. Some came with food and with water. Some told Obie to just relax, they were here to help even though they were on vacation. It was amazing. It was wonderful...it was a miracle! Obie was going to be okay after all!! These were not just guests, but friends.

Some of the guests, of course, were not helpful and demanded their amenities, regardless of the obvious exhaustive state their hostess was in. Obie was still gracious and explained with her most polite southern charm that while she welcomed them and hoped they enjoyed their stay, she may be busy for a few more days and hoped they would understand. Some did. Some didn't. Some left in a huff. Some stayed and let Obie get on with her work, while they played on the beach. That was okay with Obie...she still had plenty of work to do, but she encouraged her guests to go ahead and enjoy the parts of her home that weren't damaged. She was dismayed when she heard that some of the guests were actually using the ice and water provided by Disaster Relief for the victims of the hurricane, to fill their coolers. Such blatant disregard for Obie's well-being and recovery was just sad. But, she kept smiling, kept working, kept welcoming and most of all kept her head held high because, like the waves on the shore...that's just how Obie rolls.

We all know "Obie". She is the beautiful and resilient Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Sometimes, life is like that....it just up and pulls the rug right out from under you... and then, you get up...dust yourself off...look around and sure enough the sun begins to break through the clouds. You take a deep breath, give thanks for the wonders of being alive, trust in yourself and remember it's not broken, it's just bent. You can do this, you are strong and good. And you are not alone.

Speaking Southern

Some people think that a Southern accent is lovely, melodius and gracious while others (bless their heart) think it makes us sound like hicks. Whatever, there is most certainly a way of speaking southern whether you have an accent or not. (My accent mostly comes out when I am mad). We wanted to share some sayings and use of specific words or phrases with our non-Southern friends (bless their hearts too), along with some tips and hints if you are visting the south or want to pass as a southerner.

Addled: Confused, disoriented, as in the case of some sociologists who try to make sense out of the South, "What's wrong with that boy? He acts right addled."
Best: Another Southernism that is usually couched in the negative. "You best be home by 10 pm or your mama will be mad."

Supper: The evening meal that most Southererners eat while Yankees are having dinner. "What's for supper, honey?
Wear out: An expression used to describe a very effective method of behavior modification in children. "When I get ahold of that boy, I'm gonna wear him out."

Mind to: To have the intention of going somewhere, doing something. "I got a mind to call in sick today and go to the beach."
When you have had enough to eat but are being offered more food you say "That's a gracious plenty." Can be used for anything being offered.

We have Yard Sales...not rummage or garage or tag sales.

Fixin: Getting ready to do something; "I'm fixing to go to the Outer Banks for the week."
Real gravy does not come from the store or any can or box. Ever. End of discussion.
A true Southerner knows exactly how long "directly" is - as in "Going to Manteo, be back directly."
True Southerners knows you don't scream obscenities at little old ladies or men or anyone who drives 30 on the freeway (or the beach road or anywhere). You just say, "Bless her heart" and go your way.
Southerners make friends standing in lines. We don't do "queues," we do "lines." And when we're in line, we pretty much talk to everybody
The North has Cream of Wheat, the South has grits. Grits are to be eaten with butter and cheese (the cheese is optional)...not syrup or sugar.
The North has green salads, the South has collard greens...you must have cornbread when you eat collards.

Remember, "y'all" is singular, "all y'all" is plural, and "all y'all's" is plural possessive
Sweet Tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you're 3 years old.
When you invite a Southerner to your home please never serve them tea from a bottle...or worse, a can...unless that is all you have and it is an emergency.
In the South, when there is the prediction of the slightest chance of snow, even the most minuscule accumulation, our presence is required at the local grocery store. It does not matter if we need anything or not...our presence is required.
A true Southerner will have at least one can of WD-40 in the house.

It could happen to you!

Shelly is not a professional photographer but said she's rarely in her family photos because she's the one with the camera. This week the family has enjoyed driving off-road on the 4-Wheel Drive beachfront in Carova, visiting "Bunkers Grille" at the Currituck Clubhouse, swimming in their pool and enjoying beach walks in the evening. All ten guests are looking forward to a Jet Ski rental outing and the Wild Horse Tour later this week. Shelly says the Outer Banks will be her family vacation for years to come, as they have found it's the best value for their dollar compared to New Jersey beaches and Hilton Head, South Carolina where they used to go.

Here at the beach, Karaoke is alive and well at many local establishments.

If you prefer a 'family' night where the kids will have a chance to do their Taylor Swift or Justin Beiber songs, "Peppercorn's Lounge" at the Ramada (MP 10) starts their "Alan Ross Karaoke Road Show" every Saturday at 8:30PM.

In most nightclubs, you must be 21 to remain after 10PM, so Peppercorn's a nice family-style atmosphere and it's year-round!

“Dorie” Fuller graduated from Roanoke College with a degree in Business Administration in 1981 and moved to the Outer Banks in 1983, working in both mortgage and real estate markets. She married Webb Fuller, recently retired Town Manager of Nags Head, and they raised three children here at the beach. Facebook is here and here to stay...like it or not. I LOVE it. This social media site gives Village Realty a perfect way to personalize the vacation experience for our guests. Just think, with everything online now and with many Outer Banks rentals featuring keyless entry it is very possible that a guest could book their week online and never see or talk to a Village Realty employee. We don't like that because our "hook"...what we are known for is customer service.

Facebook gives us the opportunity to answer questions from future guests, maybe guests, past guests and those who may not have ever been to the OBX before. And OK, yes it is fun too. You can ask a question or take a pool and within minutes have 10-20 comments (or more). One of the ways we like to use it is for giveaways...no strings attached. We have given away everything from a two night stay at First Colony Inn B&B to gift certificates to Kellys Restaurant, Cloud Nine Creative Emporium and even a helicopter ride over the beach.

Our current giveaway is a "big" one because we passed 5,000 followers. What is it? A free off season week in a Village Realty Vacation Rental complete with gift certificates and VROBX t-shirts.

Why You Should Take a Vacation

According to a recent poll (not scientific) on one website most people either do not take enough vacations or worse, never take one. When we do take vacations we are often still “plugged in” via our cell phones, Ipads and lap top computers. So, we are really not “away” from work at all.

Just like your weekends, vacations are a time to relax, restore and recharge. You are still in work mode and this defeats the reason for the vacation.

Did you know that taking a vacation can actually help you do your job better? The benefits that come with vacations lead to an increased quality of life and that then can lead to a better quality of work on the job. Makes sense.

A good vacation, some good down time, helps us to reconnect with ourselves which is essential to feeling our best.

You are less likely to experience “burnout” if you take time off. You are more rested and therefore more creative and productive. Sure, re-entry into the workplace after a nice long vacation can be stressful but that is where delegating and planning pays off. And, you can only do what you can do. One tip that I learned early on was that you set your phone message and your auto response on your email to reflect that you will be back one day later than you actually return to the office. This gives you a buffer of one full day to catch up.

Vacations can relieve stress in lasting ways. If you have plenty of free time while away, down time, your time…whether it be reading or napping or beach time, etc. you can return to your everyday job better able to handle those day to day issues that occur.

Vacations are a gift to you and they are also great for strengthening bonds with family and friends. A study by the Arizona Dept of Health and Human Services found that women who took vacations tended to be happier in their marriages.

Maybe you simply cannot take a week off, no way, no how. How about a mini-vacation? Even getting away for two or three days will make a difference. Really.

My thoughts on a hot July day on the Outer Banks

The summer "season" on the OBX is almost half over...it always goes quickly

The summer is my least favorite time of year. Why? Hot, sticky and hot. I love seeing all the people come here and staying in our vacation homes, eating at local restaurants and having fun though

I wish people would not wear offensive t-shirts. I wish everyone could afford a real vacation.

It is always nice to see the difference in a person from when they check in and when they check out---they are relaxed and smiling!

If you do it right you can teach your kids some history while you are here on vacation and they won't even realize it. Blackbeard, The Whalehead Club, Civil War History, The Wright Brothers, Jennettes Pier, the lighthouses

Go to John's Drive In in Kitty Hawk and get a milkshake

You have to try Blue Moon Grill in Nags Head and Mama Kwans in Kill Devil Hills (order the fish tacos at Mama's...just do it).

If you have only ever come to the OBX in the summer you should try it in the fall...right through November. It is absolutely beautiful. Lower prices. Almost everything is open

If your child starts screaming in the restaurant, please carry them outside.

Please don't throw your cigarette butts on the beach or anywhere else

Please do not ever pass on the right on the beach road. I was driving home the other day (on the beach road) and there was a car in the southbound lane signaling for a left turn. There was one car in front of me -- a black Charger I think--and two cars behind the turning car. The car immediately behind the turning car went around it--on the right--actually on the grass. Rude and illegal and dangerous. But guess what? The black Charger in front of me turned out to be a Po-Lice Man..and yep, he did a U-turn and went right after the bad guy. That means a ticket and you don't want a ticket, especially on vacation

It is always good to have a relationship with one or two people at a rental company. It never hurts to ask for discount. You may not get one because it is up to the owners of the vacation rental but it is OK to ask.

Always let the rental company know of any maintenance and housekeeping issues as soon as possible so they can be addressed while you are here. It is frustrating when someone checks out and then reports that the bathroom sink was clogged or the TV in BR #5 doesn't work...we can't fix it if we don't know about it.

Please come back to the Outer Banks often. We appreciate you. Truly.

There are so many interesting and fun things to do on the Outer Banks but I sometimes wonder if we (The Village Realty People) do not know about them then how are visitors finding out about them...if they are. This weekend I decided to post about some "different" types of places or activities that you may not be aware of. Just like you, we depend on word of mouth from other locals on what is good and what is not so good...and if you find locals recommending something you can trust that it would be worth your while to give the place a chance. So, here we go...

Cloud Nine is a unique little jewelry and bead store in Nags Head. It is tucked away in the Pirates Quay Shopping Center at Milepost 11 1/4...Ginny Flowers is the owner and operator and is as nice a person you will ever meet. She has all types of sea glass, shell, bead and other jewelry in her shop. This is a great place to pick up some "take home" gifts or even better, some gifts for yourself.

We carry a vast assortment of beads, findings, jewelry making supplies, seaglass and fantastic sterling silver jewelry. We also showcase local and regional paintings, prints, pottery and art. Looking for something fun to do that involves eating? Take an Outer Banks Restaurant Tour with Terry. There are several options for tours...either walking or driving. From their website (http://www.outerbanksrestauranttours.com/):

"Outer Banks Restaurant Tours offers tours from Memorial Day through Labor Day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Each tour is comprised of three to five restaurants that are in close geographic proximity to each other. Some tours are walking tours; others are driving tours on which participants will be chauffeured from restaurant to restaurant. The group will gather at a specified location and then proceed as a group to each restaurant on the tour. At each restaurant, there will be a brief presentation by the owner or chef, followed by a small sample of a signature dish paired with a tasting of wine or beer. The restaurant tours will last approximately three to four hours, including meeting and travel time."

Are the kids bored? Are you going crazy trying to keep them occupied? We are here to help...
On Wednesdays at the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo children 12 and under can take an exploration where campers sniff a sixteenth century herb garden. They will take a stroll along the fragrence walk to touch and feel and smell such plants as lemon verbena and lambs ears.

Roanoke Island a.k.a. Manteo

When most people think of the Outer Banks they think of Nags Head, Kitty Hawk and maybe Kill Devil Hills. Back in the day, we used to just say "Going to Nags Head"...not going to the Outer Banks.

Probably no one says "Headed to Manteo" for vacation but this charming little town has lots to offer. OK, no ocean over there, granted but worth a day trip at the very least.

If you have ever been here before I am sure you have heard of the Lost Colony Outdoor Drama and most likely have seen at least one performance.

But have you visited the Elizabethan Gardens or the Elizabeth II? The Elizabeth II is a 69 foot square rigged sailing vessel representative of the ships that brought the first colonists to the New World in 1585. This ship was built as the centerpiece of America's 400th Anniversary Celebration to represent one of the ships used to transport Sir Walter Raleigh's colonists to the New World between 1584 and 1587. It is located across from the Manteo Waterfront at Roanoke Island Festival Park.

While visiting the Elizabeth II you will see and hear living history interpreters re-create a day aboard the original Elizabeth as she rode at anchor off the Outer Banks in the summer of 1585. Men and supplies went ashore in small boats to establish a military settlement. A reconstructed camp in the forest nearby portrays the very first days in this strange new land for the new arrivals. After their return to England about ten months later a second group of settlers arrived in 1587. These are the colonists who disappeared from history...and remembered in the outdoor drama known as "The Lost Colony".

The kids will love Big Al's, a 50's themed restaurant on US Hwy 64/264. You will see it on the LEFT as you head to Manteo from the beach. This place is very family friendly and your group can hang out in the video game room or choose some favorite oldies from the box...then show off your dance moves.

Continue your voyage back in time and take in a movie at the old Pioneer Theater in "downtown Manteo". This theater was built in 1934 and runs one first-run movie a week. All of the movies shown are suitable for families. Really, this is a unique experience.

Dear Franklin

Dear Franklin,
As your wife and the mother of your two children (remember the fifteen hours of labor I went through when the twins were born?) I must insist that we rent our own place on the Outer Banks this year. I will not go through another week listening to your sister trying to sell us Amway and I am certainly not going to make my own children put up with those horrid children of hers. Need I remind you of how little Anthony Jr. bit our baby daughter on the arm? That left a bruise for two weeks, not to mention the trauma. Nor will I eat one more tofu burger that your brother in law "cooks".

No, Franklin ... our children and I will be spending a nice family week at The Croatan Surf Club in Kill Devil Hills. This is located on the oceanfront and there is an outdoor pool and a spray ground that the kids will love. There are two hot tubs, one outside by the pool and one indoors ... next to the heated indoor pool.

If you care to join us, you can work out daily in the fitness room and maybe even play some arcade games with Franklin Jr. I plan on sitting on the Oeanview terrace of Lands End OBX (that is the name of the town home that I have reserved) and watching the sun come up. We can all enjoy the Oceanfront gazebo. Our rental faces East and does have Oceanviews so I am already anticipating sitting on the terrace with you and enjoying a nice glass of wine at the end of the day.
Lands End OBX has three bedrooms and three full baths so it is the perfect size. There are two king beds and one pyramid bunk. And, this sealed it for me, the beds are made before we check in. I don't have to do it. Towels are also furnished.
I took your allergies into consideration, Franklin and this Outer Banks vacation rental does not allow pets and has a no smoking policy.
Don't worry, you can watch your sporting events ... there is a TV in every room and yes, there is wireless Internet access so bring your laptop computer. But, no business allowed that week.

The kids are very excited and I hope you will be too. Make any excuse you want to your sister and brother in law--maybe they will want to rent their own place at The Croatan Surf Club. That is fine ... as long as it is not the place next door to our townhome.

Nags Head: A Popular Vacation Spot in 1861!

The article above appeared in the Daily Dispatch (Richmond) in May 1861. In the very month that Virginia seceded from the Union and the Capital of the Confederacy had been moved to Richmond, Nags Head was recommended as a favorite and pleasant summer resort, whose surf bathing was “nonsurpassed.” But, perhaps its most notable attribute, given the “present excitement,” i.e., the Civil War, was that it was thought to be “secure from attack, either by land or water.”

And, yes, Nags Head was considered to be in Currituck County at that time.

Free or Almost Free Things To Do at the Beach

Vacations don't have to be expensive to be fun and/or relaxing, especially on the Outer Banks of NC. Here are some of our suggestions to have fun and save money..

1. The beach. Of course. Free access, plenty of beautiful sand and ocean. Don't forget the sunscreen. If you have little ones, bring a kiddie pool with you and fill it up with ocean water. They will stay entertained for hours.

2. Go grabbing...in Colington, the sound or at Currituck Heritage Park. Only cost is the price of the chicken necks

3. Catch up on your reading...not much better place to read than on the beach or on the deck while you catch some OBX breezes

4. Chase some sand crabs at night on the beach... all you need is a flashlight and some excited kids

5. Behind the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills is the Arboretum...with a shade path and a butterfly garden and sun garden. The shade plants are marked. It is like a mini version of the Elizabethan Gardens

6. Go on a nature walk in Nags Head Woods or the Center for Wildlfe Education in Corolla... classes are available at the Center in Corolla like the "Yuck" class where the kids can see videos of animals that barf. The Currituck Banks National Estuarine Research Reserve Access Trail is a boardwalk in Corolla--at the end of highway 12

7. Jockeys Ridge...always fun. Climb up there near sunset and you will be treated to one of the most awe inspiring sights you can imagine

8. First Fridays in Manteo ...tons of fun and free to attend. Live music, good food and vendors selling local crafts.

9. Organize a sand castle contest

10. Catch an afternoon movie...save money

11. Check out the little sandy beach behind Jockeys Ridge...very quiet and no waves. Perfect for the little ones

12. Go the the docks at either Oregon Inlet, Wanchese Seafodd Industrial Park or Pirates Cove and watch the fishing boats come in

13. Duck Research Pier...the kids may not not even know they are learning something

14. Early Bird Specials at many restaurants

15. Eat your biggest meal midday at a restaurant (cheaper) and then have a picnic on the beach for dinner

16. Kids Day is every Wednesday at Kitty Hawk Kites. 10 am to 2 pm

17. Free Saturday wine tastings at the Wine Specialist at MP 5 in Kitty Hawk. 10 am - 8 pm

18. Farmers Market every Saturday in Manteo

19. Art Gallery at Roanoke Island Festival Park...free admission

John Harris and Ralph Buxton were now very successful businessmen developing retail and sport stores in almost every town on the Outer Banks. In 1991 the two businesses became separate entities with John Harris managing Kitty Hawk Kites and Ralph Buxton managing Kitty Hawk Sports with maintained joint ownership of the properties. On every shift of the wind and tide, Buxton and Harris set their sails to catch the new trends in these sports and bring the experiences to the public. Their once small hang gliding school is now the largest school of it’s kind in the world. The Kitty Hawk Flight School provides beginning, intermediate and advanced instruction to students as well as instructors in foot-launched and tandem hang gliding, 35 instructors instruct over 10,000 each year. Since 1964 over 300,000 students have gone through the school and receive certification meeting the US Hang Gliding associations published standards.

The two “surfing hippie” engineers were happy with their humble hang glider rental business and had no idea it would grow from half a garage business into a wind and water sport empire. Their world exploded into instruction, sales and rental for hang gliding, sailing, surfing, kiteboarding, kayaking, jet skiing, rock climbing, water skiing, segway tours, wakeboarding, parasailing and boogie boarding and the all the gear that goes with each. KITTY HAWK KITES AND KITTY HAWK SURF CO

During the sixties the winds of change blew through our culture like a storm and the first of the baby boomers were graduating from college to seek their dreams. For two young men who became friends during this era, they found their dream literally “blowin’ in the wind”.

John Harris and Ralph Buxton were these two young men. They had been friends while in college, both were engineers and they shared the love of the California coastal lifestyle and sports. After college they went in separate directions but stayed in touch. Both on the east coast now, Ralph moved to Annapolis, Maryland while John settled inland North Carolina in Winston-Salem. One day in 1973 John Harris phoned Ralph to tell him about an adventure he had on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He had gone to Jockeys Ridge, the tallest sand dune on the east coast, had strapped himself into a hang glider and discovered the thrill of wind-powered flight. Out of this conversation came an idea and the two developed a plan to start a business in Nags Head renting hang gliders.

In 1974 they started Kitty Hawk Kites in an old garage right across the street from Jockey’s Ridge with the Atlantic Ocean at their backdoor. This garage was part of the Casino, a Nags Head nightspot, and even though they shared it with another tenant, it was the perfect location. Located between Jockey’s Ridge and the Atlantic Ocean, a 10 minute walk took them hang gliding to the west or surfing to the east!

Nags Head was a small town then and most visitors spent their time fishing and swimming but soon, hang gliding caught on and business boomed! Unfortunately as rentals increased so did damages to the hang gliders. The young entrepreneurs found themselves spending too much time making repairs and less time enjoying the beach lifestyle they had envisioned. After thinking it through, they decided the solution to the problem was also an opportunity. Kitty Hawk Kites gave birth to a hang gliding “school” and it was now a policy that anyone who rented a kite had to take a lesson. With this plan they attracted more customers, revenue increased and the kites were not being damaged like they had been. This mission became their new business model. Kitty Hawk Kites would not only be a retail and hang gliding rental establishment, but it would now teach customers how to master the sport.

Soon, Kitty Hawk Kites made Nags Head a hang gliding destination. Jockeys Ridge was now a NC State Park and issued hang gliding permits and Kitty Hawk Kites had been granted a concession permit. So the business continued to grow and t-shirts, kites and more sports equipment were added to the inventory. John and Ralph looked for a place where they could expand and leased a residential/retail building near the garage. By 1979 with yet another expansion needed, these young entrepreneurs acquired property at the north end of the garage property and built what is now known as the tower. Within a year, windsurfers and catamarans became the most popular water sports and along with added sports, sales, rentals and lessons, and yes, it was time for the next addition. The old Casino had by now collapsed and the “Quizo” bingo parlor at the southern end of the land parcel was for sale. With the purchase of the Quizo building, Kitty Hawk Sports was born. Later, in 1986 the land between Kitty Hawk Kites tower and Kitty Hawk Sports was acquired and Kitty Hawk Connections was built. More tomorrow...

Village People Behind the Scenes (Corolla Office)

I had the pleasure of visiting the Village Realty/Corolla Office this week, (located just 1/2 mile past the first water tower in Corolla at the Visitor Information Center complex off of Old Stoney Road.)

My initial impression of the resort rental office was sparkling, cool and welcoming! The 'Village People' were gracious enough to spend some time with me, one on one to talk about their interesting hobbies, volunteer activities and past-times beyond their various and diverse office persona's.

Vickie Grimes, Vacation Rentals Specialist hails from Fort Knox, Kentucky and just recently relocated to the Outer Banks where she and her husband have owned a home for years. Corolla was always their retirement destination. As her husband's career made turns and changes the relocation came sooner rather than later. Vickie's creative passion includes professional, artistic Sandblasting, Laser Engraving and Custom Framing. In addition to renting cottages and vacation homes to families for their summer retreats, Vickie can also make custom signs for homeowners, sandblasted custom wine bottles for wedding & family beach memory gifts and personalized frames! In addition, back in Kentucky she used to have a chapel where she performed hundreds of weddings. Since the Outer Banks is one of the top five wedding destination locations in America, it is fitting that Vickie is a certified North Carolina Wedding Officiant and can perform marriage ceremonies.


Bill Koebernick

Bill Koebernick, Corolla Rental Manager hails from Iowa, has lived here on the Outer Banks for over a decade and has been with Village Realty for six years. Bill summarized his position as Rental Manager saying he, "finds the day-to-day challenges of the job interesting and looks forward to each new opportunity to problem-solve, or use creative thinking to overcome obstacles." He never knows how his day will be as each is different, but he does know that he and his team will be able to handle it, make it right.

In his spare time, and for the past ten years, Bill volunteers at the North Carolina Aquarium in Manteo as an open-water certified diver to clean the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" exhibit. The 285 gallon tank exhibit consists primarily of live sharks. "I'm no more afraid of sharks than one would be of dogs. Some bite, some don't. Some are hungry and aggressive, some are gentle. You never know when you see a dog or a shark which temperament you might be up against." It's a peaceful world under the water...no phones ringing, no talking...just the sound of bubbles. Above water, Bill likes to spend his time competing in a variety of volleyball games and tournaments. He has his own grass court at his home in Kitty Hawk, and participates in weekly games at "Tortuga's Lie Shellfish Bar" in Nags Head.


Karen's Favorite Rental Dream House "EURE (#VOH40)"

Karen Gregory, Vacation Rentals Specialist lives in the remote "four-wheel drive' area of Carova Beach, and has worked for Village Realty for four years. She sincerely enjoys and promotes the level of service that Village Realty offers their guests and is happy to provide her expertise on area places to go, for people who have never vacationed in Corolla before.

Karen recently rented a lovely 4-Bedroom soundfront home called "Egret Alley" to the "Masterson Family" from Texas, who are enjoying Village Realty's over-the-top service for the first time this year. The Masterson's are not new to the Outer Banks and have been renting vacation homes every summer since 2003 when they lived in Richmond, VA. Before that, Donica Masterson traveled with her parents to the Outer Banks for over thirty years, "We always made an annual pilgrimage back to N.C. to visit friends and relatives, and some of my fondest memories always revolved around trips to the Outer Banks. From Nags Head to Emerald Isle, my family has rented many vacation homes, condos, and stayed in hotels along Coastal Carolina."

2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest

The 2011 Outer Banks Photo Contest has started and we have already received some excellent photos. We did things a little differently this year and require all entrants to choose a category for their photo(s) when they enter online. You may enter as many photos as you like and no, you do not have to be a guest in a Village Realty vacation home or make a purchase of any kind.

The only rules are that the subject has to be someone, somewhere, some place on the Outer Banks...so that part is pretty easy, yes? No professinal photogs please...unfair advantage. And you have to enter your address including email so we can notify you.

In the past we have received photos of armadillos, ostriches and a scenic view of San Francisco...all were fun to look at but we don't have armadillos or ostriches here and so all these photos were not considered.

Last year we had almost 3,500 photos sent in and the vast majority were wonderful. You can find them all over our website.

Grand prize is a free stay off season in a Village Realty vacation home. We choose the house but do take your requests under consideration (pet friendly, no smoking, certain area, etc).

SURFING THE OUTER BANKS

About 1000 years ago the barrier islands known now as the Outer Banks were born when the cold Labrador Current and the warm Gulf Stream Current merged. These barrier islands, as well as sandbars and shoals, continue to be reshaped by the powerful action of these currents. Known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”, the waters off our coast have taken over 2000 ships as victims of its shifting shoals and sandbars. No doubt, the first surfers were probably shipwreck survivors who rode a broken piece of ship into the safety of the shore. Today ships still find these waters hazardous, but you’ll find modern day surfers happily riding the never-ending line up of these celebrated waves for the sport of it.

Professional surfers travel from around the world to surf here and many pros call these Outer Banks home. Recreational surfers find there way here each year for a holiday of wave chasing and riding. From businessmen to busboys, this area also boasts of hundreds of hometown surfers. While they may not carry the title of professional, male and female alike, they are among the best of the best and live here for the awesome challenges this ocean provides. So how does one know when it’s time to surf or if the waves are fun or epic? Seasoned surfers follow weather patterns and are always ready for when the great Atlantic offers up waves. Old school surfers might talk about the “coconut telegraph” but now web cams and surf reports, give daily conditions and possibilities. And there is always a telltale sign that says waves are going off – when you see pilgrimages of vehicles passing with a full quiver of boards piled inside and on the top, and surfers gathering on dune tops to watch the line up, you know it is show time!
The powerful punch of the waters that roll onto this 100-mile stretch of beaches from Corolla to Hatteras to Ocracoke Island creates many surf breaks and classes of waves. Piers from Duck to South Nags Head offer a break in the wind and cross-shore drifts and on best days, waves offer high energy beach breaks barrels. On the northern beaches the piers have great sandbanks on either side that present waves with hollow peaks. Of course, each beach access has its own fame and like all surf destinations, surfers give nicknames to their favorite places like “Landromat” in Kitty Hawk. As you go further south to Pea Island and Hatteras there are many great breaks starting with “Boilers” at Pea Island. At “S-turns” in Rodanthe, good barrels can be found. Northeast swells rule at Rodanthe Pier where the scene can be busy and parking difficult to find. Down south through the small towns you escape to capture lefts from the NE swells or decent bowls that swing in from the south. Frisco, Hatteras and Ocracoke fall into the line-up, but the most famous Outer Banks break is still at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Clean conditions and sizable waves mark this surf destination as almost always ride-able at anywhere from 2 to 12 feet tall. Remember, bragging rights go along with surfing “Lighthouse”!

Summer season here can sometimes bring flat spells that make you think you are at lake Atlantic; however, if a good wind comes up, you’ll quickly see improved surf and find enjoyable rides. You might be surprised to learn that the warm water doesn’t generally come in until July so check surf reports and be prepared! Hurricane season (late summer to early fall) on the Outer Banks brings beautiful classic waves of 4 to 10 ft action with winter nor’easters creating great surfing from September through May. Unfortunately winter surf here can also bring very cold water temps between 47 to 58 degrees and strong winds, but westerly winds can blow out even the coldest and messiest ocean to make for a day or two of clean, powerful and crisp waves.

What if you have just started surfing or want to learn? It probably sounds easy – paddle out and surf! But before you begin, here are a few hints to make it easier and some advice to keep you (and others in the water) safe. First, find places to rent or buy a board and check for park service classes, private instructors and surf camps. These folks are experienced and dedicated to making your early surfing experience safe and rewarding. If you fall into this category remember these things:

• Never surf alone.

• If you can’t swim, learn before you try surfing!

• Always wear a leash.

• Learn the proper etiquettes of the surfing culture.

• Do not surf near swimmers.

• Surf away from groups of seasoned surfers.

• Do not go out into waves bigger than you can handle.

• Surf responsibly and keep our beaches and water clean.

All surfers that are new to the Outer Banks will find most towns have posted a few surf regulations. Locals will tell you that these restrictions are enforced. Pay attention or you'll get a surfing ticket as part of your vacation memorabilia! Here are the rules:

• Surfers must wear leashes.

• Do not surf within 200 ft of any pier.

• If time restrictions apply, surf only during hours posted.

Now you are stoked about surfing Outer Banks and you might need to get new board shorts, bikini, spring suit, wax or a new board. Surf Shops here range from trendy to those who cater to the die-hard surfer and are located in every town on the Outer Banks. You can find anything you want including a bevy of renowned, world-class shapers who live here and can make a custom board just for you.

Are you ready for your surf vacation and you want to compete? Maybe you don’t surf but want to watch a contest? You’ll enjoy the many excellent pro and amateur contests. These are well organized events, welcoming to competitors and spectators alike, and offering a family friendly atmosphere! "Bike Week, a first full week on the OBX , saw all kinds, shapes, colors and sizes of motorcycles from everywhere. They stayed everywhere (in motels, cottage rentals, etc), and visited everywhere (restaurants, shops etc)....it was good for the OBX and along with the various "spring breakers" (from the different school districts) provided a much needed "economy jump start" for the summer season." The weather cooperated almost all week and the bikers seemed to be welcomed everywhere.

This is an annual event on the Outer Banks and seems to be growing in popularity, and why not?! Great weather, beautiful beaches and friendly locals who appreciate the bikers along with all the other guests who visit our island.

Other Event Details: Non-refundable charity event. Race is rain or shine but would be canceled in the event of thunder and lightning. Shoes mandatory. Water supplied at 5K start and finish. Easter Fun at the Village

When we came into work today there were Easter eggs hidden all over the office ... with candy in them! Nice way to start the day.

Next we were asked to judge a Cupcake Contest! Several local bakers brought in their beautifully decorated confections and we chose our favorites in creativity, presentation and taste...yum. There were lime cupcakes with cocount frosting...turtle cupcakes ....chocolate "black tie" cupcakes and more.

After we came down from our sugar highs the Easter Bunny's assistant came around with a basket filled with more eggs. We got to pick one and inside we found money, gift certificates for things like "leave two hours early with pay" and more candy.   What a fun way to make everyone at Village Realty feel special!

We are at about 87% occupancy right now with both Spring Break Week and Bike Week happening at the same time. It is great to see so many people in the area again and our weather has been cooperating for our guests.

Outer Banks, NC – Matt Whelan, Senior Real Estate Broker for Village Realty, Nags Head spearheads an extraordinary gift of kindness for our local Outer Banks Hotline locations.

Hotline (founded in 1980) is a private, non-profit human services organization that provides crisis intervention, temporary shelter, information and referrals, advocacy and domestic abuse prevention education services to residents of and visitors to the Northern Outer Banks.

Lynn Bryant (Executive Director Outer Banks Hotline) tells the story:

It all started with a kind-hearted woman by the name of Betty Butler of Kill Devil Hills. Betty volunteered her time, working in the original Hotline’s Manteo Thrift Store every single Wednesday for nearly two decades. Betty was also an active member of the Board of Directors devotedly offering her time and her warm smile to those in need. When she passed away several years ago, Hotline sorely missed her generosity, friendliness, kindness and compassion.

Betty’s son, Steve Johnson was proud of his mother’s dedication. He admired the work that she did and the services provided by Hotline to families on the Outer Banks. Steve now lives in the mountains of Winchester, VA and is an active member and missionary of his church. Each year, his church missionaries, comprised of approximately 20 men and women (with combined skills of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, etc). raise funds and travel all over the world (most recently the disaster relief project in Haiti) “sharing the love of Christ by doing service for their neighbors.” Through church contributions they pay their own living expenses, and buy all supplies from local retailers to help the communities they serve.

This year, in honor of his Mom, Steve presented Outer Banks Hotline to the missionaries. The original Manteo building is in disrepair, especially the parking lot where the lighting hasn’t worked for quite some time. The Hotline Pink location in Kitty Hawk needs roof and soffit repairs and the building needs repainting. The missionaries purchased salvaged parking lot lights through a local supplier in Virginia, and will buy paint and construction materials from locally owned Kellogg’s, Griggs and Ace. The more money they save on living expenses, the more than can donate to their mission.

This is where Matt Whelan stepped up as “Johnny on the Spot”. Through his connections with Village Realty, Matt contacted the owners of the “Croatan Surf Club” in Kill Devil Hills, who generously donated three luxury condominiums for the missionaries’ one week stay. Sam & Omie’s Restaurant also agreed to donate meals for the group.

Matt is not new to volunteering his time and resources to Hotline. He also MC’s the “Festival of Trees” annual winter fundraiser, as well as volunteers as Chairman for the Outer Banks “March of Dimes” hosting a variety of benefits for children.

Housekeeping does the initial sweep of a Village Realty beach house, using an intricately detailed checklist that includes cleaning, dusting, mopping, making beds with freshly washed linens, arranging towels…etc. Following the housekeepers is a “Home Inspector” who will inventory the premises and make sure everything is in working order.

Each home is readily provided complimentary paper products, soaps and trash bags as well as a “Welcome Package” containing instructions and contact phone numbers should you desire any service readily available. The “After Hours Emergency” number will be answered by a real live person (usually Curtis) who acts as triage for everything from a burned out light bulb, to a deer in the heated Oceanside swimming pool. (Yes, the Outer Banks does boast beautiful wooded wildlife preserves and sometimes, those deer and wild horses do wander off the beaten path.)

“Once a guest called Guest Services because the beaches had “Red Flag/No Swimming” warnings because of rip tides and the Dare County Lifeguards kept blowing their whistles at the guests. They requested we contact the lifeguards and ask them to stop doing that because they were on vacation and they came to swim.”

Of course, it was explained that swimming against the lifeguard’s orders on a Red Flag day could be a violation of Outer Banks safety protocol and a misdemeanor and fineable offense so it’s highly recommended guests heed the flags AND the Lifeguards at all times.

The Maintenance Department has nine technicians who are available and on-call for any given emergency maintenance, as well as day to day operations. Village Realty also employs highly recommended vendors (Action Plumbing, Inc. of Kitty Hawk and Surfside Heating & Air of Manteo, for example) working tandem with certified plumbers and electricians and HVAC specialists. Vince Simanski and Julie and their professional certified team are super busy operating the Pool & Spa Department. With a scheduled route of the 500 plus heated, indoor, outdoor, salt water and fresh water swimming pools and hot tubs are meticulously cleaned and maintained on a weekly basis.

Skateboarding on the Outer Banks of NC

Bowl? Grind? Taco? Sharpie? Hammer? Ollie? Hmm, if you know these words then you must be a skate boarder and it is time to add Outer Banks to your vocabulary! So you ask why would a skater be interested in the Outer Banks, other than to enjoy it’s beautiful clean sandy beaches, blue skies and warm ocean? Seriously, where would you skate here? Local skate authority Jesse Davis, of the Outer Banks Skateboard Guide, says “the Outer Banks has gained a reputation as the “Oregon of the East Coast”. It is now a skaters vacation destination with a wide variety of parks of concrete and skatelite, both free and for fee, plenty of “downhill” runs, “secret” places and incredible skate/surf shops, all spread up and down this amazing 100 mile stretch of sand.

Check it out. Your first stops will be in Currituck County before the bridge to the Outer Banks. Maple Skatepark has a reputedly gnarly bowl that according to the Skateboard Guide, “seems to come right out of a 70’s film”. Next take a 20-minute drive and 45-minute ferry ride to Knotts Island Skatepark, which is modeled after the infamous Wallows skate ditch in Hawaii. We hear the locals will be stoked to see you! Now head back to 158 and go 1 mile before the bridge and skate Powells Point Sound Park; their rad bowl is one of skaters’ favs. Now you cross the bridge and head on up to Corolla’s Island Revolution Skatepark. It has what is described as a “compact combi-bowl” with a concrete flow/street area and their own skate shop. Ready for the next stop?

Well, switch up your boards and head south! Look for the new park in Kitty Hawk village opening in 2011 and rumored to be a primo design. In Kill Devil Hills the 158 Surf & Skate is a challenging indoor spot with booming sound and a killer skate shop in the midst of all the fun. Also in Kill Devil Hills is Aviation Skatepark, an excellent blend of street and flow bowl that will keep you busy for hours. It is within a 10-minute walk to the Wright Brothers Memorial, for those in your group who don’t skate.

Continuing on to Nags Head you’ll find the Y.M.C.A. Skatepark. It is outdoors, offers something for everyone and is best known as the knarliest skatepark on the Outer Banks! On Roanoke Island, Manteo’s Skate Plaza has an oversized “driveway” and is within walking distance to restaurants, galleries, deli shops and museums. Catch your breath if you can and then, over the inlet bridge and to Hatteras Island we go! Drive on to Buxton where you can “drop a hammer” at the Fesseden Center Skatepark. Boasting a bowl and prefab street area, it has a playground and tourist center next door. In Frisco, south of Buxton, is the 3:16 Skatepark. In an air-conditioned warehouse, this major park offers daily as well as late Friday sessions, barbecues, bands and good-hangout kind of vibes!

Taste of the Beach 2011 Review

From a recent guest of The Croatan Surf Club who took advantage of a package deal to stay three nights and attend three 2011 Outer Banks Taste of the Beach events.

"We LOVED the Croatan Surf Club....the website pictures didn't do it justice. We loved the hot tub on the terrace, view, location, etc.... Our favorite Taste of the Beach Event was dinner at Kelly's....oysters would not have been a usual choice for us, ...but it was a tasty adventure. The Tapas crawl was fun, but more stops or progressive dining (apps, entree, dessert) at each stop would have been better. And the food at the Grand Event was wonderful despite the crowd and warmth of the rooms. We would definetly stay at Croatan Surf Club again, but possibly pick different Taste of the Beach Events to attend".

Wine, Chocolate and Cheese - Oh MY!

My co-worker Holly and I attended the Wine, Chocolate and Cheese Taste of the Beach event on Friday. We arrived fashionably late and quickly took our seat to let the tasting begin. The room was full with a wide range of people - couples from Georgia, birthday girls from Richmond, then the folks who were just there for the wine and of course serious tasters with note taking and all. I'm by no means a wine-connoisseur just a gal who likes a little vino from time to time so please forgive my descriptions which are probably not proper wine terminology. This is a list of our favorites:

Cederberg Bukketraube '10 with Jalapeno cheese straws - wine smelled like peaches and tasted like grapefruit, can't go wrong.
Talbott Chardonnay '08 with Beemster aged gouda - so delicious.
PKNT Carmenere '09 with Manchego - wine was kind of earthy and cheese yum.
Meiomi Pinot Noir '09 with Chocolove chilies and cherries - again earthy wine and chocolate sounds totally odd but was really good.

Honorable mention for super cute label goes to Ch. D'or et de Gueles '07. Apparently the winemaker is a women who designs all her labels.

Our sommelier (right?) let us in on a few tricks of the trade and helpful hints. Did you know that most restaurants will only carry one type of wine from a winery? So to get around this little glitch one winery may bottle under many different labels. Also he suggested we refrigerate red wine after opening, we had no idea and always thought you leave red out. And don't judge that screw off cap - wines bottled in the Southern Hemisphere are more likely to have screw off tops. He was a very interesting fella and gave us a little teaser that we might see Native Vines somewhere on the beach this summer. Stay tuned...

Duck Tapas Crawl

For this year’s Taste of the Beach, I did the Duck Tapas Crawl - a drink and plate of small dishes at three of Duck’s premier restaurants - how could I go wrong?

My companion and I decided to start at the Blue Pointe so we could enjoy the sunset over the Currituck Sound. Arriving about an hour after the official start of the Crawl, we were seated immediately at the bar, even though there was a wait for regular tables. Good start to the evening!

We were given a choice of three small plates and a specially chosen beer or wine. After getting excited for the beer, our server informed us they were already out of it and we could have Stella Artois instead. Okay, I have no problem with Stella. My companion ordered the scallop ceviche and I had a delightful and large flatbread with hummus and lamb. The ceviche was a little cooler and drier than I like it, but my companion and the couple next to us both enjoyed it.

Alas, we missed the sunset, but we ordered two more Stellas and sat outside in a little grassy area with an outdoor bar that looked like it could be a lot of fun in warmer weather. Meanwhile, the air was cooling off so we decided to drive to our next stop rather than walk the half mile or so.

Next up was Red Sky Café, a great restaurant in an okay location, sharing a building with a realty office. We were given the choice of waiting for a table or sitting at the bar right away - and I’ve never turned down a seat at the bar. Here again, it was Stella or wine. I have to say it wasn’t all bad that Anheuser Busch was bought by that Belgian company.
The service here at Red Sky was absolutely excellent - warm, inviting and professional. The food was out of this world. My companion and I both wanted to order the shrimp and grits, so the server suggested the roasted pork. Both portions were more than enough for us to share, or else it might have started a fight. The shrimp was large, succulent, perfectly cooked and perfectly spiced. The grits had a great texture and a subtle sharp cheese flavor. These are not the mushy grits you may have tried once. We immediately agreed that this was the best dish so far.
And then came the pork. This pork melted in my mouth. It was so richly and superbly flavorful, I could have died right there. I believe it was accompanied by potatoes, which were a nice easy contrast to the beauty of this pork. Unfortunately the substantial amount of fat - solid fat which really was wonderful as part of the dish - was a little too rich for me, so I paid for it after the beer wore off.

If we didn’t have another stop to make, I think our server could have upsold us another round of everything, but at least we did get two more Stellas and gave her a nice tip. We tiptoed along a little path through the woods and into Roadside.

I was looking forward to ending the evening here, as there is a lovely outdoor seating area where we could enjoy the almost-full moon. Our server was very friendly and told us all our choices were made other than whether we wanted beer or wine. Beer please! I thought she meant that they were out of everything but one dish, but there I was mistaken. We actually got three little dishes on one plate - shrimp and grits, a pork barbeque and cole slaw dish and a single oyster.
The oyster was perfect - a play on Oysters Rockefeller, we were told. The shrimp and grits would have been outstanding if I hadn’t just experienced shrimp and grit nirvana next door. But the barbeque turned out to be my favorite. It was a little piece of sweet cornbread with pulled pork in a vinegar-based sauce and some spicy yet sweet slaw on top. It looked great and tasted better, a perfect blend of sweet and spicy for my taste.

Oh and the beer was above and beyond as well - three small glasses of microbrews. There was one stout that I didn’t finish and a wheat beer that my companion enjoyed enough to order a full glass of. I don’t remember the third beer, but I’ll admit by this point, I was ready for a Bud Light.

We ran into some friends and enjoyed the night air and moonlight until it was time to beg for a cab to pick us up in Duck. It was a long wait, so we decided in the interval that while Roadside won for presentation and atmosphere, Red Sky got the prize for best food and service. Even though the Blue Pointe is one of my favorite restaurants, I would say everything was just good and not great. If that had been my only experience there, I would wonder what all the fuss was about. But it still looks like a great place to take in the sunset this summer. All in all, I felt like I certainly got my money’s worth for a night of food and drink, and the restaurants did what they set out to do: convince me to come up to Duck more often!

Taste of the Beach at Lucky 12

The 2011 Outer Banks Taste of the Beach Event is officially over and from all accounts it was another big success.

Quite a few of the Village Realty People attended various events over the weekend and while I cannot speak for them I can tell you that the venue I went to was outstanding.

Three of us -- all Villge Realty People --- went to Lucky 12 Tavern in Nags Head on Friday night for the second annual 'Beer Meets Food' night. Since Lucky 12 is one of our favorite places anyway this just made it better.

Many people think of wine pairings with food but Mike and Mark at Lucky 12 want to educate people about beer pairings with food too. They served us five courses and Mike gave us a brief history of each beer as we ate.

The first thing we were served was a 16 oz PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon), ice cold, with homemade potato chips and french onion dip. The beer was the perfect complement to the crispy, salty chips.

Next we had Abita Strawberry Lager (this was my favorite of the evening) which was accompanied by a spinach, almond, craisin salad tossed with Strawberry Basil Vinagrette. This was outstanding...the beer had just a hint of the strawberry and the salad was slightly bitter/slightly sweet.   A big hit.

Then ... fried oysters with a spicy remoulade. This was paired with New Belgium Ranger IPA and both got rave reviews.

Getting hungry? My favorite dish of the night was the New Orleans BBQ shrimp and Andouille sausage with rosemary biscuits, served alongside New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale. This was Krista's favorite beer. I am just not a fan of dark beer but I did take a few sips of the Fat Tire...then gave it to Krista.

Our fourth tapas plate was a smoked chicken wing and roasted garlic mashed potatoes. The dry rub on the chicken was perfect.   A Dixie Blackened Voodoo Dark Lager was a bit hit with the people at my table.

Finally we had Guiness Stout served with braised beef, garlic toast and a curried Guiness beef gravy. Very hearty and filling.

This was a very casual and fun setting and we were encouraged to ask questions. A great way to end the work week!

Meandering thru Downtown MANTEO (Founded in 1899)

Downtown Manteo

There is a little town on Roanoke Island, just over the causeway bridge (about 5 miles from Nags Head) called Manteo. If you’re looking for some good ol’ North Carolina nostalgia this is the place to find it. Follow the signs to the “Waterfront” and you’ve got yourself one day trip you’ll not soon forget, and you’ll want to come back again and again….and again.

Much like “Margaritaville” is wherever Jimmy Buffet is; “Mayberry” is wherever Andy Griffith is.

Manteo is our little Mayberry, a very small town with cobblestone brick streets, historical inns and buildings over a century old. There are bookstores, novelty shops, antique stores, coffee shoppes, restaurants, ice cream parlors, gorgeous inns and homes with white picket fences tucked around beautiful flower gardens…and the waterfront dock moored with boats!

My top ten favorite places to visit in downtown Manteo:

1. Manteo Booksellers (105 Sir Walter Raleigh Street): For book lovers, this quaint store has everything from the bestsellers to authentic Outer Banks guides and is often the host to book signing events by local authors.

2. Coffeehouse on Roanoke Island (106 Sir Walter Raleigh Street): Located on the second floor of a beautiful old building, this coffee house offers little tables and nooks where one can sit and sip, or read indoors or out while watching the passersby. Fabulous!

3. Antiques: There are several places, including an entire 'mall-type' building featuring antiques and collectibles to stop and visit during your Manteo walking tour. Such popular little shoppes include; Muzzie's, and 'Outer Banks Quilts and Antiques' next to the coffee shop on Sir Walter Raleigh Street.

4. "The Tranquil House Inn" and 1587 (Gourmet) Restaurant: (Queen Elizabeth Avenue) Located right on the waterfront, this gorgeous Inn is an ideal place for a romantic dinner. I would suggest ordering my favorite appetizer, "Pan-seared scallops with wasabi sauce". Mouthwatering food, professional staff and breathtaking view!

5. Poor Richards Sandwich Shop: (303 Queen Elizabeth Avenue) Tucked along the sidewalk and occupying the entire first floor of the old Jollif building, along the waterfront is a local favorite! Poor Richards opens up in the back to a spectacular porch overlooking the waterfront docks, and the Queen Elizabeth II Sailing Ship across the harbor. Poor Richards is a staple stop for early bird breakfasts, delectable sandwiches for lunch and an ever changing dinner menu (cafeteria style ordering). Local musical entertainment is also enjoyed most weekends.

6. Old Tom's Ice Cream Shoppe: (916 Amanda Street) or Nags Head Specialty Foods (up the stairs to the Waterfront Shoppes) offer delicious ice cream cones to go, as well as nostalgic fanciful gifts and novelties.

7. Full Moon Café & Grill: (located by the clock tower, on the corner of Sir Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth) Serving lunch Wednesday thru Sunday from 11-3PM and dinners on Friday and Saturday only (during the spring). Yummy soups prepared daily are served in a sourdough bread bowl. The cafe also in home to a delightful gallery featuring arts and crafts from local artisans.

8. Magnolia Grille: (408 Queen Elizabeth Avenue) Serving soup, sandwiches and burgers for lunch with a beautiful outdoor dining area of picnic tables surrounded by shoppes, magnolia trees and flora. The atmosphere alone is why this is one of my favorite spots.

9. Stock-Aide General Store: (107 Budleigh Street) Wood plank floors creak as you wander through this nostalgic old time country store. Coca Cola signs, RC Cola, Moonpies and candy sticks in glass jars can be found at this blast from the past.

10. Kitty Hawk Kites (307 Queen Elizabeth Avenue) Kayak Tours start here, right on the waterfront, with a colorful array of flags and whirly-gigs invitingly displayed outside to attract a cottage shopper. Some of the funniest tee shirts and pirate paraphernalia can be found at this cozy little store as well.

There really is no "off-season" here on the Outer Banks...

Off-Season Beaches (Village Realty Photo)

Although many locals use the term "off-season" to describe the time between Labor Day Weekend and Memorial Day Weekend because our tourist business peaks primarily during the beachy, hot summer months, the term off-season may be off-putting to some.

The Outer Banks has notoriously fabulous vacation weather all year long. It is especially noticeable, on a day like today in February, when the sun is shining, it's 73 degrees and there is a balmy breeze slipping off of the ocean that makes me lift my face to the sky and simply beam.

For those of us who are lucky enough to live here or smart enough to just BE here, these lovely summer-like days are blessings after a cold nor'easter, or a rogue snow storm of 2 inches that always takes us by surprise in winter months. But even those 'rough weather days' are gorgeous. Have you ever seen snow on a sandy beach, or frost gathered on the tips of sea grass? Let me tell you it's breathtakingly beautiful!

February, Camellia Buds (Kill Devil Hills)

There are already buds on my camellias, and signs of spring are just about everywhere you look. The beaches all along the seashore are pristine in their lack of umbrellas and towels and people. Just a few lucky souls here and there, pants rolled up, toes in the sand...holding hands, gathering seashells and sea glass washed up among bits of driftwood. Imagine!

Where can you buy fresh LOCAL fish on the Outer Banks?

Road Trip! Just over the causeway Washington Baum bridge to Roanoke Island/Manteo take a LEFT at the light and meander down curvy Route 345 east to the Wanchese Seafood Industrial Park docks. (Where the road forks you'll bear left.) Once you arrive at the docks, there are several places to choose from (O'Neal's, Etheridge's, Daniel's, Moon Tillet's, etc.) where you can buy the catch of the day right off the boats.

Bring cash (no credit cards) and an empty cooler to transport your purchases back to your beach house or condo kitchen. It's wintertime here on the Outer Banks but the Wanchese fishing docks currently have an abundance of fresh Grey Trout, Flounder, Rock, Catfish, Tile Fish from the ocean waters and both White and Yellow Perch from the freshwater sound. Also available during the winter season, are fresh Oysters, Sea Scallops and if you're lucky you might be able to get a bushel of Blue Crabs.

All fish can be purchased whole or filleted and ice is also provided, if necessary.

Wanchese is not exactly a tourist location, but a genuine working fishing village. There is no downtown, but there are a few diners, the Wanchese Inn Bed & Breakfast, a post office and even an art gallery or two, if you care to take a drive around while you're in this unique part of our eclectic Outer Banks world.

Trivial Bits of Wisdom and Knowledge to Take into the New Year

In the spirit of making daily life a teensy bit easier for everyone in 2011, I would be most delighted to share eleven of the new things I have learned this past year:

1. There are little fuses in the plugs of Christmas lights (a secret compartment hidden right where the plug goes into the wall socket). Each box of lights comes with a little baggie containing one or two replacement fuses, about the size of a pinky fingernail. If the lights burn out, you simply replace the fuses by sliding the hidden compartment open, popping out the old ones and putting in the new ones. Voila...lights work again.

2. Drains really can be unclogged by pouring some Baking Soda and then a little White Vinegar into them. It bubbles and fizzes like an Alka Seltzer tablet (which is also something you can use to unclog a bathroom or kitchen sink drain). It not only works, but it's very fun to watch. Flush with warm water.

3. Mistletoe grows live in the tops of dead trees all over the Outer Banks. If you look up, and see a cluster of green on the top of a rotted old tree...that's most likely mistletoe.

4. If you ignore the red safety flags on the beach and swim during a rip tide, you could possibly be arrested for public nuisance and receive a hefty fine, if you make it back to shore.

5. A podium is something you stand on, a lectern is something you stand behind. Most people incorrectly call lecterns podiums.

6. Black Eyed Peas were originally deemed 'lucky' during the Civil War era, when the Yankee soldiers destroyed most all of the crops but for some reason left the unusual looking peas unscathed, allowing the hungry people and animals of the South some sustenance during the hardest of times.

7. Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Toothpaste dabbed on a blemish overnight completely removes it by morning!

8. A piece of bread, placed in a cookie jar, will help keep homemade cookies fresh and moist days longer.

9. Worrying is a useless emotion. Not one single thing I worried about came to pass as horribly as I had imagined. Unless you actually get paid to worry, it does nothing but ruin what could be an otherwise perfectly good day.

10. Putting a little sprinkle of cinnamon in your fresh coffee grounds before brewing makes even the most ordinary coffee taste fabulously gourmet.

11. It is actually not impossible, nor even improbable, to have a beautiful snowy White Christmas at the beach.

Outside, white flurries brave salt air. The snow isn’t sticking, but inside Village Realty in Nags Head, North Carolina the employees already are experiencing holiday joy despite the pre-Christmas date.

The coastal company has raised $7874.56 for gifts for needy children in the community.

Businesses, individuals and non-profits make donations to the Angel Gift Tree annually so that local children’s wishes are granted and their needs are met. Volunteers shop for everything from stuffed animals and iPads to shoes, coats and blankets. There were 302 children on the list this year.

The holiday project, celebrating its 32nd year, is a partnership between the Outer Banks Women’s Club and Dare County’s department of social services.

Village Realty’s giving is up from last year despite the chilly national economy. “It was a very sizable donation,” said Julia Haywood, OBWC Angel Tree chair.

Located in Dare County, home to First Flight and Virginia Dare’s Lost Colony, Village Realty hosts the fundraiser annually with each department adding its own flair.

At a dollar a pop, employees are allowed to wear blue jeans during the off-season. Fundraising festivities also include a delectable chili cook-off, raffles, auctions for pools, hot tubs and island vacations, and a popular Wii bowling tournament. The benefits are two-fold – funding the Angel Tree as well as fostering camaraderie among the 100-plus staff. Plus, it’s fun!

Outdoors, seaside wind chill easily cuts through the best winter wear. But inside the realty offices, hearts are warm from giving. Come Christmas morning Village Realty’s generosity will twinkle in the eyes of this year’s Angel Tree children.

You can tell it is really the off season

This is the time of the year when things really slow down on the Outer Banks. More places are closed or getting ready to shut down for the year and there are much fewer visitors. With the holidays fast approaching and everyone focusing on decorating, partys, eating and visiting...reservations have slowed down too. However it does look like 2011 will be another good year on the OBX.

What is going on here now? Well, McDonalds is closed for renovations. Big news!

Baby, It's Cold Outside....December on the Outer Banks!

Even here at the beach, we've had to exchange our flip flops for fluffy warm socks this December...but there is still absolutely no place like home here on the Outer Banks. The spirit of the holidays is everywhere with twinkling lights and bells ringing in the season of giving. It's a cheerful place and despite the cold, the seashore is still breathtaking every single day.

Festivities abound at many local establishments offering a safe haven from the chill in the air along with bouquets of Christmas cheer.

For locals, one of the most wonderful traditions is a drive to see Jim & Ann Poulos' house in Kill Devil Hills, just after dark:

Head South on Rt. 158 ("The Bypass") into Kill Devil Hills
1. Turn RIGHT at light onto Ocean Acres Dr. at Pigman's BBQ (opposite MacDonalds)
3. Follow Ocean Acres Drive through a residential neighborhood...the road will shift from paved to gravel as you go up a hill. Just over the top of the hill you can not miss the Poulos'.

In 2005, the Poulos home won the "Best Christmas Display" in the nation contest on NBC's Today Show.

Parking is nigh impossible, and be prepared to walk a little ways...but as soon as you get out of the car, you'll FEEL the magic, and smell the hot cider or cocoa. Christmas music is playing and you'll transcend into childhood again with giddy anticipation as you wander throughout the wonderland, oooing and ahhing.

If I click my ruby red shoes heels together three times, the Outer Banks is exactly where I'll end up.
